Who you are:

We are always looking for amazing talent who can contribute to our growth and deliver results! Geotab is seeking a European Patent Paralegal who supports a wide range of responsibilities within the Intellectual Property team. It is primarily focused on assisting the European Patent Attorney based in the Germany office, while also providing support to the broader IP team located in Canada. What you'll do:

As a European Patent Paralegal your key area of responsibility will be to support the intellectual property team in Europe and North America. You will be responsible for the tasks related to intellectual property processes, document preparation, administrative support, and project coordination, as well as managing day-to-day activities. You will also need to provide regular status reports to key partners to ensure the project is on time and meeting expectations. You will need to work closely with the Intellectual Property Teams and Geotab's Legal Team.

How you'll make an impact:

  • Assisting the European Patent Attorney and the broader IP Department.
  • Drafting, preparing, revising, and formatting official correspondence and submissions to the European Patent Office (EPO), World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO), with opportunities to expand responsibilities to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO).
  • Reviewing and taking appropriate action on incoming correspondence from outside counsel, the EPO, WIPO, the USPTO and CIPO.
  • Corresponding with outside counsel by email or telephone.
  • Contacting Intellectual Property Offices (including EPO, WIPO, USPTO and CIPO) to resolve basic issues on files such as inquiries and status updates on applications or changes to paperwork and follow ups.
  • Maintaining and updating administrative records and monitoring deadlines into our intellectual property docketing system (ANAQUA).
  • Corresponding with internal inventors and obtaining signatures via DocuSign.
  • Navigating and managing submissions through various patent office online portals.
  • Assisting with the creation and maintenance of internal precedents, templates and standard operating procedures.
  • Comfortable in a flat organization with an entrepreneurial spirit and little concern for hierarchy.
  • Support Geotab global strategic initiatives.

What you'll bring to the role:

  • Equivalent combination of education and/or work experience in related field may be substituted.
  • Graduate of an accredited post-secondary institution with a diploma or degree in Paralegal studies (or equivalent).
  • European Patent Administration Certificate is considered an asset.
  • 1-3 years experience with European patent prosecution, including direct filings with the European Patent Office (EPO).
  • Proficient in English, with excellent verbal and written communication skills to support a Canada-based team.
  • Experience preparing and filing EPO-related forms and handling electronic submissions through the European Patent Office.
  • High accuracy and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent proofreading abilities.
  • Able to work well under pressure and respond to fast changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Highly organized and able to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal relationship building skills.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to problem solve well-judged decisions.
  • A strong team-player with the ability to engage with all levels of the organization.
  • Technical competence using software programs, including, but not limited to, Google Suite for business (Sheets, Docs, Slides).
  • Experience working within a technical or engineering organization/knowledge of the high-technology industry is an asset.
