What you'll do:
The Senior RF Hardware Developer will conduct comprehensive research, simulations, schematics, PCB designs, and testing to ensure the best performance of RF hardware, requiring minimal guidance. The Senior RF Hardware Developer serves as a vital resource in providing field and production support related to RF hardware issues, reflecting their significant expertise and involvement in resolving complex challenges. This role plays an essential role for ensuring Geotab’s hardware meets all regulatory standards and certification.
This position works closely with Engineering and cross-functional teams, handling the complex and intricate design and analysis of sophisticated RF circuitry, such as communication modules, chipsets, amplifiers, filters, and antennas.
How you'll make an impact

Designs, develops and reviews advanced RF hardware schematics, including RF circuitry such as amplifiers, filters, mixers, antennas, transceivers, and other RF circuits using Altium and Ansys.

Selects, designs, and verifies advanced RF modules/chipsets such as GPS/GNSS, LTE CAT-1, LTE CAT-M1, LET CAT-4, WiFi, BT for telematics devices, ensuring optimal performance.

Creates prototypes of designs for testing and validation, to ensure it integrates into larger systems and meets RF requirements.

Drafts comprehensive test plans and conducts extensive testing of prototypes to ensure they meet the desired specifications and performance criteria, using RF test equipment such as spectrum analyzers, vector network analyzers and communication testers.

Analyzes and troubleshoots hardware to identify and resolve advanced RF related issues during the development, production and deployment of our product.

Conducts research on the latest RF technologies, industry standards and best practices.

Implements new innovative RF hardware solutions and optimizes the quality and performance of our products.

Acts as subject matter expert and mentor to other team members.

Collaborates with the System Engineering team to understand and translate system RF requirements into RF hardware specifications.

Simulates the behavior of RF circuits and systems using computer-aided design software (CAD) before building physical prototypes, to identify potential issues and to optimize performance.

Work closely with PCB Designer to understand and translate system requirements into specifications and quality printed circuit board designs.

Prepares detailed design documentation, including RF hardware schematics, block diagrams, datasheets, BOMs, and test reports to support industry certification.
What you'll bring to the role

Post-secondary Degree/Diploma with specialization in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or other related Degree/Diploma.

5-8 years of Hardware Engineering experience

Experience in antenna design, PTCRB submission, and/or carrier (AT&T, Rogers, Telus) certification requirements is a plus.

Using antenna theory and design principles for matching networks and radiation pattern analysis.

Designing advanced RF circuits, including amplifiers, filters, mixers, and other RF circuitry.and interpreting PCB layout and design, including impedance matching and signal integrity using PCB EDA/CAD design tools (e.g., Altium).

Performing RF troubleshooting and debugging activities using simulation tools like Advanced Design System, High-Frequency Structure Simulator and other RF simulation software, to identify and resolve signature quality, interference and noise.

Using RF test equipment such as network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, vector network analyzers (VNAs), signal generators, and oscilloscopes and other RF test equipment for comprehensive measurement and verification.

Applying best practices in complex hardware design, such as electromagnetic interference (EMI), electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), signal integrity concepts and techniques to ensure high-quality transmission and reception of RF signals.

Optimizing RF systems for various applications of wireless communication.

Applying regulatory standards and certifications ensures hardware developers are compliant and meet quality standards for hardware designs.

Researching latest trends and advancements in RF technology for IoT.

Using Google sheets, docs, and slides (or similar software), to be able to manage and execute on day-to-day tasks.
