Geotab is seeking Lead Vehicle Systems Engineering to focus on growing Geotab's world class vehicle support. This will be a technical leader who can drive innovation and best practices in vehicle systems engineering. While technical leadership is crucial, you should also be willing to remain hands-on and contribute directly to technical projects.
What you'll do:
The role will play a pivotal role in driving innovation and technological advancements within the Automotive R&D team, acting as a high level individual contributor. The primary responsibility will be to provide technical leadership in projects related to designing, implementing, and testing cutting-edge software and hardware solutions for the automotive industry. This role will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including embedded firmware and hardware development, to ensure the successful development of innovative products and features.
How you'll make an impact
- Oversee the engineering efforts related to the development and integration of various vehicle data product streams.
- Design and guide best practices and standards regarding vehicle communications with respect to safety and security.
- Aid in the vehicle data reverse engineering process through both data analysis and by helping define and improve existing processes.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including hardware, software, and data engineering, to define the requirements, considerations for performance, safety, reliability, and other key factors to ensure seamless integration between vehicle systems and Geotab's platform.
- Lead the root cause analysis of problems and work with the team to implement effective solutions and improve tooling and workflows
- Define the overall architecture of the vehicle system during investigations. This involves determining how different subsystems will interact, the overall layout of components, and the flow of information between systems.
- Take ownership of technical projects and contribute to their implementation and output.
- Manage and execute system validation and verification activities, ensuring all system components meet safety, reliability, and performance standards.
- Provide technical expertise and guidance on vehicle system-related matters, acting as a subject matter expert for both internal and external stakeholders such as.
- Break down large engineering efforts into smaller pieces that can be completed in parallel in collaboration with the team.
- Develop an in-depth understanding of the GO device application and functionality and how all vehicle interaction specific firmware modules work.
- Mentor other developers on the team and work with the management to set the direction of the team and guide key stakeholders on execution choices and trade-offs, and advise management with insights and recommendations to improve the team.
- Keep up-to-date documentation for all areas of responsibility.
What you'll bring to the role
- 10+ years of experience with various vehicle systems, sensors, actuators and including controls systems, diagnostics and electrical/ communications architecture, design and operation
- Expertise in vehicle architecture, embedded systems, and CAN bus communication protocols.
- Proficiency in vehicle diagnostics via OBD-II (J1979) and J1939, and strong understanding of vehicle communication standards (ie. KWP, UDS).
- Strong understanding of the automotive software architectures for ECU development, such as AUTOSAR, specifically in regards to the application layer/ functional clusters
- Familiarity with Automotive Ethernet and DoIP
- Familiarity with legacy vehicle communication systems (ISO 9141, ISO 14230, SAE J1850, J1708, etc.)
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to problem solve to well-judged decisions.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in both English.
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong project management skills with a track record of successful project delivery.
- Ability to think strategically and anticipate future technology trends.
- Able to learn or write SQL queries and Python scripts on data from Google BigQuery to determine device health and effectiveness of new functionality.
- Stay updated with industry trends and emerging technologies, implementing best practices and innovative solutions to enhance Geotab's systems.
- Having a valid car driving license with at least 1 year of seniority is a must.
- Because of the nature of the job, the position will require you to work on site in a variable percentage of days per week.
