Geotab is seeking a Security-focused Embedded Systems Team Lead who will be responsible for security development in the cutting edge telematics unit, the Geotab GO device. The Security Team works on improving IOT security for the Geotab IOT hardware, focusing on security of data in transit, security of data at rest and ensuring that only authenticated firmware is running on Geotab products.
The Kinematics Team develops Geotab IOT firmware that keeps track of device location such as accelerometer, GPS, and gyroscope. The Kinematics Team uses the data to improve accident and harsh driving detection & reporting algorithms.
What you’ll do:
As an Embedded Systems, Team Lead your key area of responsibility will be managing team expectations and ongoing design and development of the designated Embedded Systems team platform. You will need to work closely with colleagues on the Embedded Systems team, as well as Solution Engineering, Software Development, and key leadership stakeholders. The main focus of this role is Agile sprint management. Working with the development team to break down medium and large projects into smaller cases, carefully document those cases to align with developers and stakeholders and provide mentorship to the team in working towards completion of the projects.
To be successful in this role you will provide mentorship on high quality C code development and work with the embedded security team to identify & document product security risks and align with various stakeholders on mitigation strategies. In addition, the successful candidate will have strong communication skills, in their technical documentation, collaboration with teammates, and with providing technical support to other Geotab teams. The successful candidate will also be able to manage multiple timelines and contrasting priorities to ensure timely results.
How you’ll make an impact
Manage team expectations with regards to task assignments, work arrangements, and other department expectations.
Manage the ongoing design and development of the designated Embedded Systems team platform.
Provide mentorship on high quality C code development (where the code is well thought out, architected, can be tested and maintained.)
Work with the embedded security team to identify & document product security risks and align with various stakeholders on mitigation strategies
Develop and implement strategies with teams to troubleshoot areas of concern and identify improvement opportunities.
Enforce coding standards and perform peer code reviews for designated teams.
Manage ongoing improvements to team-specific modules.
Support product/project mgmt, arch and SMEs in the team to accomplish in timely fashion the “what” (requirements, specs) via the “how” (implementation, design, etc)
Design training documentation focusing on interfaces and protocols.
Work with the Learning Center, Support, and Solutions Engineering teams in identifying required areas of training, and provide the material required for such training.
Keep up-to-date documentation for all areas of responsibility.
Provide projects and people leadership and guidance to the team.
Oversee the activities and performance of direct reports:
Provide direction, coaching, and mentorship to the team.
Engage in the development of the team by coaching, providing feedback, identifying areas of growth, and training opportunities.
Collaborate and support employees during the performance management process, meeting KPAs, and career development planning.
Support Geotab global strategic initiatives.
What you’ll bring to this role
5+ years experience in embedded systems design
Few years experience formally leading a development team or clear demonstration of leadership skills and capacity in a previous development role.
Strong secure system implementation fundamentals is a plus
Experience with C, Rust, SQL, Python.
Experience and familiarity with OBD, CAN interfaces, J1939 is a plus.
Ability to research and solve open-ended design problems.
Understanding of underlying electronics to the point where it influences firmware development and debugging.
Strong project management skills; able to identify needs, develop effective solutions, and manage projects through to completion.
Strong people management skills; able to support under performer, resolve conflicts, coaching to take good to great.
Excellent influence without authority capabilities, verbal and written communication skills, including comfort with delivering presentations and training.
Leadership experience in a team-oriented workplace, supporting diversity initiatives, etc.
Experience leading remote teams a plus
Strong team-player with the ability to engage with all levels of the organization.
Technical competence using software programs, including but not limited to, Google Suite for business (Sheets, Docs, Slides).
Strong in Agile software development methodologies and data driven team performance.
Entrepreneurial mindset and comfortable in a flat organization.
