Geotab is seeking a self-starter and solutions-oriented individual who is passionate about data controls, privacy and data risk compliance to join our Data & Analytics team as a Data Governance & Controls Specialist. The successful candidate will work within the Privacy & Data Governance Center of Excellence (CoE) within Geotab's Data & Analytics department. This team is responsible for the delivery of insights from the over 4 billion raw records processed by over 1.5 million vehicles on a daily basis. What are the details of this position:
As a Data Governance & Controls Specialist, you will contribute to the design, development and delivery of the team’s 4-year Data Intelligence Program roadmap and will contribute to and support the development of data governance standards and procedures for Geotab’s large data environment and data contained therein. You will oversee the research, development and delivery of the CoE’s Privacy and Analytics News Service, Wiki and Knowledge portals, and the collection and analysis of key metrics and reporting dashboards to monitor organizational compliance and performance of the team’s data quality and risk control environment. To be successful in this role, you will be an individual who is passionate about data privacy and governance, with a willingness to develop your analytical skills related to the execution of Big Data solutions. In addition, the successful candidate will have a keen attention to detail, and have a strong understanding around the importance of data risk management and how to ensure it remains safe.
Duties and Tasks/Essential Functions
  • Maintain and manage the enterprise Data Catalogue, Data Lineage and Metadata Management tools within the organization’s Big Data environment (Google BigQuery)

  • Responsible for performing detailed business impact analysis of data governance control environment within the context of the Data and Analytics practices and processes at Geotab

  • Support the development and maintenance of data governance guidelines, policies, standards and process narratives for in-scope business functions

  • Maintain a central repository for privacy, data risk assessment and governance process and control documentation (e.g. data inventory, privacy notices, privacy impact assessments, subject access requests)

  • Support monitoring and reporting of priority data governance controls in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, standards and process narratives (as deemed applicable in relation to Google BigQuery)

  • Listen to Data Analytics process and technology design discussions and make detailed notes, and perform analysis documenting requirements and technical design artifacts

  • Support analysis of advanced technologies from the first stages of development to assess and monitor data use meets established regulatory compliance needs within a Data & Analytics context

  • Collaborate with Data & Analytics team members, data scientists/engineers and data product development teams creating insights for Geotab’s Customers

  • Liaising with internal privacy and security program managers, product development teams, legal, compliance, governance and data protection team members

  • Interact with Data Intelligence solution users to define system requirements and/or necessary modifications to new or existing application(s); assess third-party data governance controls and requirements and provide recommended risk mitigation solutions

Experience/Skills Required
  • Master's degree or higher in Computer Science, Data & Analytics, Information Science or equivalent

  • 3+ years of experience as a business analyst or project management role within a data-oriented capacity with demonstrated experience in data protection, privacy or security is required

  • Experienced in drafting and data governance policies, procedures and audit framework(s) is highly valued

  • Information or Data Architecture experience within a Big Data context is essential

  • Ability to take something ambiguous and transform into clear actionable requirements is key to be successful in this role

  • Experience with policies, processes, standards, auditing, assessments, root cause analysis and project management skills is a plus

  • Solid experience with multi-functional partner management is required

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills and the ability to effectively communicate designs, proposals and results; and negotiate options at management levels
