Who you are:

Geotab is seeking a self-starter and solutions-oriented individual who is passionate about data infrastructures for large scale and fast-growing datasets, including data ingestion, data consumption and processing, to join our Data and Analytics team as a Senior Software Engineer specialized in Big Data Platform. The successful candidate will work within the Data Engineer Team of Geotab's Data and Analytics department. This team is responsible for the delivery of data ingestion pipeline, consumption API and stream analytics infrastructure for over 5 billion raw and 50 billion processed records by over 2 million vehicles across 7 continents on a daily basis. What you’ll do:

To be successful in this role, you will be an individual who is passionate about software designing and developing, with a willingness to develop your analytical skills related to the implementation of Big Data solutions. In addition, the successful candidate will have a keen attention to detail and perfection, and have a strong understanding around the importance of system reliability and performance and how to tune it to the better.

How you’ll make an impact
  • Design and implement data infrastructure platforms (data ingestion, data consumption and stream processing) using cloud-based platforms.

  • Perform software development in a variety of programming languages and environments (e.g., JavaScript, SQL).

  • Understand the performance impact of the code, API use, and scalability.

  • Actively participate in design discussions and document requirements and technical design.

  • Perform quality assurance analysis by performing peer review, ensuring coding standards are followed, looking for logic errors, and other bugs.

  • Analyze call stacks, trace files, and performance data to troubleshoot and identify root cause of bugs.

  • Assist with the development and maintenance of data engineering guidelines, policies, standards and processes.

  • Mentor team members toward technical expertise.

What you’ll bring to this role
  • Post-secondary Degree specialization in Computer Science, Software or Computer Engineering or a related field.

  • 5-8 years experience in Data Engineering or a similar role.

  • 3-5 years experience in developing production-level systems using Java frameworks.

  • 3-5 years experience in designing, building and maintaining production-level application containerization.

  • Knowledge of data management fundamentals and data storage principles.

  • Knowledge of batch and streaming data architectures.

  • Experience with API design and implementation.

  • Solid understanding and experience with any of the relational databases (MySQL, Postgres, SQLServer etc).

  • Experience with database design and writing queries.

  • Familiar with Big Data environments (e.g. Google BigQuery).

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to problem solve to well-judged decisions.

  • Highly organized and able to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.

  • Strong team player with the ability to engage with all levels of the organization.

  • Technical competence using software programs, including but not limited to, Google Suite for business (Sheets, Docs, Slides).

  • Entrepreneurial mindset and comfortable in a flat organization.
